zita swoon - paradiso - 101207

great party, paradiso exploding ... including champagne because the number of 500 000 visitors was passed this year ... last time i saw champagne here was in the small hall upstairs when gorki, the famous band from belgium played there ... now zita swoon, (once again) a great gig, with this time lots of old songs in a new sound, and stef singing, dancing enthusiastically and directing the other band members, to quote some people behind me at the ah counter in the station: "stef was weer goe in form", yes indeed ... after returning a second time he left us, after 2:20 hours with "happy happy happy love love love" ... favorites today slamming doors and the night, what a (double) piano intro ...

a song of 2 humans / me & josie on a saturday night / quand meme contant / i feel alive in the city / she = like meeting jesus / thinking about you all the time / people are like slamming doors / teacher / song for a dead singer / people can't stand the truth / je range / l'opaque paradis / could't she get drowned / everything is not the same / still half my friend / big black tv cat // jintro & the great luna / my bond - disco / stamina // moving through life as prey / the night / big city

editors - paard van troje - 291107

editors in the big hall of het paard, the lovely venue in the hague ... standing in line to pick up the tickets, i realized i kind off miss this city, the action, the seaside ... a special gig tonight, an extra show at the end of the current european tour, and maybe the last chance to see them in such a small setting ... the boxer rebellion openend, and they sounded quite ok ... then editors, rushing through lights (including a piano-jump) and bones, after which we got a how are you ... if you need an energy boost, an editors show will do fine ... only 2 records, and it all sounds great, and the more they play, the better they seems to get ... played personal favorite when anger shows, and you are fading was the perfect end note, leaving us the fading out ... they returned dressed up, base and drum were batman and robin, and covered orange crush of rem, which sounded really well (the guitar playing one of the vocal lines, and b&r on backing vocals) ... after a last song, we left satisfied, and with a great thirst ...

lights / bones / bullets / an end has a start / the weight of the world / blood / escape the nest / banging heads / all sparks / heads in bags / when anger shows / the racing rats / munich / you are fading // smokers / orange crush / fingers in the factories

the national - melkweg - 281107

hayden, a bearded solo artist, opened, and for the last couple of songs he got support of the band, which was an improvement ... unfortunately they went off stage again, a jam-transition into their show would have been nicer ... but their start, some minutes later, was impressive enough, specially the base falling in on the line start a war ... six people on stage, producing great music (at one point singing all together), changing instruments once in a while (reminds me of an arcade fire review i read with the word multi-instrumentalist a few times too much, you see, happens in more bands), and a singer with only that job, so his arms free to move sometimes hectically, but with a voice like that he can do whatever he wants, even throwing the mike-stand the other way of the stage in a raging moment ... lots of boxer songs, and also other work, which i don't know yet, but that will change ...

start a war / mistaken for strangers / secret meeting / brainy / friend of mine / slow show / squalor victoria / abel / wasp next / all the wine / racing like a pro / ada / apartment story / daughters of the soho riots / fake empire // green gloves / mr november / virginia / about today

goe gezegd - 291107

and we don't stop, 291107 -172 days-, although the end is near now ... again an opinion piece in de morgen (about the small nva which is blocking the formation):

"Het zou, mocht de inzet niet zo belangrijk zijn, een vermakelijk zicht vormen: het is de staart die met de hond aan het kwispelen is."

and we continue, 141107 -157 days and counting-, start of opinion piece in de morgen:

"De zaken gaan niet echt vooruit, om even het eufemisme van het jaar te gebruiken."

and another one, 251007 -137 days now-, a legitimate question (something i already asked myself some time ago) in an opinion article in de morgen, titled "speculanten", in which the current politicians are compared with stock exchange speculators, a nice analogy throughout the article:

"Soms vraag je je af waarover die mensen het al die dagen gehad hebben, hoe dikwijls je hetzelfde kunt herkauwen zonder jezelf beu te worden."

and even more, 111007, start of an article in de standaard on brussel-halle-vilvoorde in the 'commissie binnenlandse zaken' of our federal parliament, titled "Even waren ze er, de vijf minuten":

"Bijna was het routine aan het worden, de wekelijkse sessie 'creatief met BHV' ..."

and more, 040907, quote of wz in an opinion article in de standaard, about the bhv-case:

"Wat ons wel voorgehouden wordt te geloven is dat de splitsing 'goed is voor de mensen', een letermiaanse dooddoener waarmee ieder debat al platgeslagen wordt nog voor het goed en wel begonnen is"

230807, follow up on "the elections - 100607", quote of yd in an opinion article in de morgen, about the everlasting and not progressing formation:

"Het is politique politicienne van de ergste soort, waar politici misschien op kicken, maar die de bevolking inmiddels meer en meer doet besluiten dat er daar in de Wetstraat een bende stumpers bij elkaar zit."

interpol - vorst nationaal - 231107

one word: amazing ... the best opener (pioneer to the falls, with the singer's voice overamplified, resounding like a mantra during the chorus ... "i know you try you try straight into my heart, you fly straight into my heart ... but here comes the fall"), best final song (untitled, opener of turn of the bright lights, first guitar and then the others joining), and best set in between i've seen for a while ... with the guitar in the leading violin role of a symphonic orchestra, or sounding like a second voice at times ... and this in our national (who's talking about splitting up ?!) rock hall, resembling an ancient amphittheater with the circular shape and the two crowded seating rings ... great atmosphere, which reflected on the band ... special moments: the opening series of four songs, slow hands, with rapid hand movements of the entire middle field, the starting bang of not even jail, stella was a driver (the shout stellaa-aa), lighthouse including blue faded lights, and rest my chemistry, dancing intimately on/with the guitar line, reminded me of deus' serpentine (let's do it serpentine any time let's do it right here) ... and m, you rested your chemistry a time ago now, but i know you would have enjoyed this gig, and who knows, maybe you did ........................
now where ?? werchter, marquee, pukkelpop, same ?? let's hope so ...

pioneer to the falls / obstacle 1 / narc / c'mere / the scale / say hello to the angels / hands away / mammoth / no i in threesome / slow hands / rest my chemistry / lighthouse / evil / heinrich maneuver / not even jail // nyc / stella was a diver and she was always down / pda // untitled

arcade fire - heineken musical hall - 131107

a warm fire, perfect for a cold & wet autumn night ... that's how i would describe their live performance, more powerful than on cd, and this time the sound & mix was perfect (ok, maybe not, but certainly near, a great resit!), you could hear and feel the bells, tingles, shouts, wingles, violins, sirens, guitars, backings, feedback and even more ... nice harmonies also, leaving us repeating them (probably out of tune, sorry for that :) ... the slower songs fitted well, which for me is no dip in the gig (according to other reviews), these songs are also worth seeing performed live, we, the people, don't mind sitting in the backseat for a while and relaxing ... personal favorites: black wave/bad vibrations (a repeat track on their last album, and now live superb, great driving bass drum), no cars go (women and children, let's go!) and power out (the xylophone song, flowing nicely in rebellion, hands together, boiling temperature now) ... maybe they can invest in roadies, if they keep on attracting these large audiences, tuning took always some time in between songs, but hey, they're on stage with 10 people, and in the end, it's music we're coming for, not a quick drive through the neighbourhood ... next week interpol, and the week after editors ... we're being spoiled :)

to finish, a fine line: nothing lasts forever that's the way it's gotta be there's a great black wave in the middle of the sea ...

black mirror / neighbourhood #2 (laika) / no cars go / haïti / sleeping in a submarine / black wave-bad vibrations / in the backseat / neon bible / age of consent / intervention / the well and the lighthouse / neighborhood #1 (tunnels) / antichrist television blues / neighborhood #3 (power out) / rebellion (lies) // keep the car running / wake up

arbouretum - worm - 291007

line-up: 21:15 beach house 22:00 arbouretum ...
worm, an avant-gardisch venue in a remote part of rotterdam (confirmed by the streetname - achterhaven) was the setting, cds to listen to downstairs, giant cube inside, airplane seats upstairs, and the small concert hall, fitting at most 37 people ... beach house, only 2 people - guitar & keys - had good songs, but should work on outros, all songs seemed to end abruptly ... then abouretum, this time with 2nd guitar, and this made a difference, a richer sound ... starting jamming and then lots of rites tracks, including the rise and the (now extended) jam in there ... great voice, great music ... then too soon the last song, but we wanted and got more (after a quick cigarette, give the guy some time for a smoke :) and a jewel at the end ... yiehaa ...

das pop - paard van troje - 191007

after a year of silence (exept the gig with daniel johnston, i heard little of them) they're back, one i love t-shirt in the full small hall, still popular here in the nls apparently ... they sounded the same as a year ago when i saw them at boomtown, gentse feesten: less pop, more das rock, with harder drums (new drummer, now bent, the singer, can concentrate on that, showering the first rows and performing turnexercises with the mike-stand ... still remember him opening a werchter day of the 2001 edition, dressed in white tennis-outfit and inviting couples on stage to slow on true) and dito guitars (old beard, going well with the double snared guitar played once during the gig -great sound-), all this resulting in a heavier jacket for the old hits (the love program, one, you, ...), which suits them, and the new work as well ...

afterwards three great songs, unfortunately not great in the mix: the boyz noise remix of feist's my moon my man (!!), the whip's trash (i wanna be trashed), listen here, and goose' british mode ... give me a reason ...

new york - 2809.051007

first we take manhatten ...... island of many heights, 1/5th of new york, the empire state ... what a views ... let me entertain you: lion king musical on broadway, the shout-opening nants ingonyama is goosebumping, great & ingenious stage techniques (nothing digital, all theater), the moment musafa's spirit talks to simba is nothing less but impressive; pygmalion (broadway again) starring claire danes (juliet in baz luhrmann's r+j), a great and sarcastic play; in the valley of elah, a recent movie by p haggis about post iraq-war soldiers, with a superb tommy lee jones (that end sequence!); the secret machines in the annex (soho) -the same night bloc party was playing at the madison square garden, but i went for the local band and smaller venue-, first up was a band with the sm' base player and a female singer, wearing a ballroom dress, for a moment i thought they changed line-up, not, next up were the secrete machines, which apparently did change line-up (other guitar player), 2 known songs at the start (nowhere again) and end, in between new work, which sounded ok, a bit slower and heavier than those 2 older songs, afterwards no bis, short applause and that was it, somehow strange; arbouretum in the union pool (brooklyn), a really nice venue: a little theater stage surrounded with small light bulbs, first up was illuminations, a young local ny band, which got the audience dancing at the end, next pg six, never heard of them but they sounded really good, thanks to the singing between frontman and female base, and after that (and some hours/duvels later) arbouretum, with (again strangely) less people than the band before (the bar has a large open courtyard), but they were awesome, what a sound & songs, no tonight's a jewel though, the singer explained afterwards they need 2 guitars to play it live, now they had only 1, too bad ... relaxing: bryant (incuding chairs & tables) and battery (including seashore feeling) park ... belgian beer bars tried out and approved of: vol de nuit (in greenwich village next to washington square), markt (on 6th avenue around 21st) and bxl (43st next to time square) ... starbucks & subways ... art: museums should keep their permanent collections also permanently on show (guggenheim!, whitney!), now i saw only 3 hoppers :(, which seems to be my favorite american painter, the met had a great section on modern art & abstract expressionism, and i discovered the american impressionists there and the hudson river school (great landscape paintings), the collection of the moma is quite large (2 floors) and a good overview of modern art, although i expected more pop arts ...... now we take berlin ...

annapolis - 23.280907

setting foot on us soil, always a pleasure ... i forgot to fill in the last part of the visiting card, which the fingerprint & webcampicture official pointed out friendly, so i ask 'do you have a pen', 'yes' ... point ... silence ... so i go 'can i use it' pointing to the missing part, 'next time, bring your own', he replies ... no jokes, tom, i thought ... all this after 50 minutes of rowing slowly ... my destination was annapolis, a rather small harbour town, my hotel was on the edge of town, about an hour on foot to the center, which i tried once, including the 'hm, were is the footpath gone' experience ... reason to be here was the int symp on space flight dyn, and international it was ... americans are sometimes over self confident in their presentations (home advantage maybe), russians read from their papers, very inspiring, and japanese start laughing awkwardly if they don't get the question (often the case) ... i liked the french mission with primary goal the search for supermassive black holes, i already heared the draging intro and was back in front of a stage ... and always nice to hear scientist talk about the dark side of the moon ... a strange (town?) habit was to serve beer in plastic cups, after a while, we europeans found a bar with beer in glasses, which had also happy hour after the symp hours, how nice ... friday the greyhound bus to ny, first to baltimore standing ... 'i'm running out of seats' the driver wailed when looking at the row that had to board his bus ... i thought this was the land of the free, not free seats apparently ...

feist - melkweg - 210907

a mix of really good sushi & dim sums before, in a fusian place close to the waag ... arriving a bit late, so we missed to opener, if that's too bad i don't know, 'cause forgot who it was .. the ceiling was decorated with rows of christmass-lights, making the oude zaal look like a milky way ... she appeared with something looking like alluminium around here arms, not sure whether that was part of the decoration too or actual clothing ... but music, that's why we're here for, and that was good, a bit on the soft side on some occasions, but when she took her big guitar and played it loud, it rocked ... i remember how my heart behaves (actually the line the cold heart will burst), a nice song, and 1 2 3 4, a song you easily whistle along ... the concert was sold out, which is sometimes, and in this case so, a bit too much people, limiting the movability and increasing the always-a-problem-here- in-the-nls noisability ... end note: festival, yes, another concert, no ... afterwards bar-hopping, following the black/red signs ...

beethoven's 6th, opus 68 - concertgebouw a'dam - 150907

a concert of 'het nederlands philharmonisch orkest', conducted by yakov kreizberg ... our seats were amazing, looking down on the orchestra and the whole concert-hall ... first up was 'la mer' of debussy, i have to admit that i can not (and could not immediately afterwards) repeat the theme or anything else of the piece, but probably that says more about my musical abilities than about the work itself, although i not yet have discovered the sea when listening (then or at home) ... anyhow it was a good starter, the final was impressive, as the whole experience actually, seeing and hearing an orchestra in action is ... something ... then the 6th of beethoven, the 'pastoral' ... this work i know better (and i wanted to see it 'live' already for a long time), and it was worth it ... getting carried away by the music ... the first part was like lying totally relaxed on the gras in the sun, but after the storm (gewitter), the end felt different then expected, normally i like the last part (hirtengesang) the most, but now it seemed a bit hurried, without bringing the best out of it ... or this was because i was thinking, no, don't let it be over now ... cause when sitting above the orchestra, you see the last page being turned ...

afterwards how to get lost in amsterdam, trying to find p's car, which was at the end of the herengracht (hearing a spanish speaker pronounce this some ten times is quite funny) ... coming from the center/station, there's first the herengracht, next the keizersgracht, and then the prinsengracht, and they all end in the amstel (close to the waterlooplein), some 2 km south of the station ...

pukkelpop - 16.180807

great: editors, new work sounds live even better than on cd, less screaming guitars and a more powerful sound, racing rats, smokers are waaw ... a bit tired of the comparison with interpol ... both bands are super (great voices), and different enough (rythm, song structure and darkness) / cocorosie ... what kind of music this is is difficult to explain, now it sounded really good ... the human beatbox, i still feel the base, two different voices making a fine combination, and back for a biss, after long applause and hesitation / sonic youth ... what a noise and how that can sound great ... guitars going everywhere (where's more feedback), even sword fighting (see http://www.proximusgoformusic.be/nl/report.php?id=196851) / krakow, (really) slowrock, but you get sucked in and enjoy it fast enough ... and their cd 'as the heart is' is beautiful ...

nice parties: nid and sancy, digitalism, groove armada (i see you baby) and justice, 2x9 marshall amplifiers on each side of the cross, we felt it ... we are your friends !! and we are completely wet as well ... great party

good, but: arcade fire, should be a separate category, but the sound mix nearly the whole gig was awfull ( with all these people on stage you also want to hear what they do), and the singer's voice never reached far enough ... so i was disappointed in the sun ... looked forward to this moment all summer (actually since i missed them here 2 years ago), and then this ... luckily the last 2 numbers were ok, with rebellion the song to forget the rest of the gig and listen to the bells, and the lies ... and luckily in november they come back, so no too hard feelings :) / tool, i already saw them twice blowing me away, but now they only blowed ... too long versions of their songs, seemed like they wanted to play us to sleep ... ok, it's pukkelpop, it's great to have this band on top of the bill, but you also want to go home with a feeling of yeah, now we've had it all ... now we left still hungry (luckily there were tuck cookies and ravioli) ... so this time they too, dissapointed, next time, i will not leave a sonic youth gig to see them playing / gogol bordello, but marquee fits them better / rodrigo y gabriela, 2 acoustic guitarists, sounded really good, but b decided to arrive then (bad timing!) / battles, i would have liked it but i decided too early to leave apparently / the view, but it all sounds a bit the same (ask me to repeat a song and i can't) / cansei de ser sexy, could also be listed with the nice parties, but i expected alala to sound better / sophia, the sea was (again) great, as well as the beep in easy, but too acoustic at times / mintzkov, but i saw them enough for a while now / patrick watson in the chateau, but maybe the wine was better than the music / the streets, no guitars for once, and good songs (dry your eyes is a classic), but the trick to go low and jump should not be repeated too often, but pleasure on stage (including frisbee), and that's what counts / hanne hukkelberg, but maybe a bit too tired to enjoy properly, i liked the bike on stage though / mud flow, popular in walloon, sounded really good, but almost no one in the wablief then (last gig friday night)

furthermore: tonight tonight, the only pumpkin song i heard, from my tent on the camping ... drieman & felixen ... freezing fridaynight ... n left alone on the camping in his small tent (quote, sunday at 11:30, 'haha ik word hier net volledig alleen wakker haha iedereen is weg! haha en ik herinner mij niets!')

spain - 03.140807

(BCN) absinthe / stuck in an elevator / reading on placa real / tramvia azul - tibidabo (see shadow of the wind) / harry lives !! / macba / GR 5 parc natural de montseny / me duele la rodilla / thunderstorm in the morning / (ANDALUCIA) siesta in sevilla / granada is the best ... low profile bars, each beer comes with a tapa / gazpacho / playa de villaricos ... organised wild camping (strictly forbidden :) ... wa een zottekot / creamfields - nathan fake - mouseup - luciano (minimal/sexy funk) - john digweed - i got the poision, i got the remedy / surviving on bocadillos / sun / malaga without a bed, but with a beach / chatting in airport

gentse feesten - 14.210707

saturday - this is the end ... tsunami at pole pole, there should be a shuttle service connecting the two sides of the water ... trying to find the hotsy totsy (jazz-bar, now i know), karate with isomo-boxes (fish!) ... and a last tea ...

friday - a night of good agreements ... mintzkov at boomtown, see cactus review, paper cuts at both sides now (ruby red) ... duvels in the tent ... and an everlasting bus-ride to get home ...

thursday - absynthe minded at st-jacobs, good gig, a happy b-day for one of the band-members, the crowd around me knew lots of their songs, so they already have some kind of fan-base, a highly particular element were the moving light-poles, seemed to have run out of a transformer movie, and sometimes a bit too blinding ... at a certain point the drummer was surrounded by smoke, must be horrible at times, sitting there in the back with a smoke machine pointed and blowing at you ... afterwards relaxing in the baudelo park, what a difference with the huge crowd two days later ... i prefer the weekdays when it's easy to get a coffee ...

wednesday - first de keuze van vos, 10 bands playing 1 song one after the other, amusing concept, see full review here (http://www.cuttingedge.be/music/ gigs/18158-boomtown-2007-dag-5), after that gorki ... den beestenmarkt is sold out ... first older material (amongst others wie zal er voor de kinderen zorgen, ooit was ik een soldaat), later some newer (the great wees eens stil jongens), and at the end the obligatory soms vraagt, anja, piranha and mia ... in between a shower of cookies (luc didn't trust a box of chocolate cookies and threw them back in the audience) and luc playing 'do it again' on guitar ... next a bit of buscemi, and then ... i'm on fire (banquet, bloc party - great dancing tune) ... swinging into the night ...

tuesday - fixkes @ boomtown, saw them already better in action at stubru.uit in the theaterzaal (see history), which is a better place to enjoy their music ... still, the freesyle fabrik cover of vrijdagavond stays super: "mag ik eens op u lief zitten alstublief z'is echt zo schoon en ik heb goesting in iet nief, k heb heel goe gerief en k zijn nooit nie agressief, mag ik eens op u lief zitten alstublief" (this int antwaarps) ... after that, eddy, the voice of europe, "is nog altijd wreed goe bezig" (quoting t, around twelve)

monday - rain pouring down from a great height delayed my arrival at the frames gig at boomtown, the singer called us fucking brave for coping with the rain, let the umbrellas dance, and played good songs ... if you find yourself going to a frames gig, learn the line "we have all the time in the world to get it right, to get it right ... we have all the love in the world to satellite, to satellite" (from people get ready), so you're not looking like what are these people singing here ..... then daan at the big square, little to add to that, first bis was solo on guitar de lichtjes van de schelde, second housewife ... wonder how desperate one has to be to come up with such a song ... and thanks for the beers !

sunday - frank boeien at the same square, although i was waiting for paradijs (came last), i enjoyed the whole gig ... in the middle a fine base-solo ... i wanna learn to play that instrument (already at werchter when hearing paul simonon of the good bad queen playing it boiled in my mind) ... it's the base (no, kidding) of most songs and can sound so warm, dark, full, rhythmic, funky, mysterious ...

saturday - billie king at boomtown (new setting, more cosy), second time i see them in gent, first was in the handelsbeurs (if i'd live in gent, i would go there every week), from that gig i remember specially the moments they sing together ... now the songs had more power, a girl with a guitar indeed looks sexy, and they make nice music, favorites are slow down and big girls ... check out their cd ... then the scene on the stbaafs square, the lau refers to amy whinehouse at werchter, "i learned 2 tings, first she is great, and second, people should drink more on stage" ... cheerz! ... i remember drink op de liefde, a good thing to drink on ... at the end a long iedereen is van de wereld ... and there underneath the big yellow lighted cathedral (what a scene) the wereld is inderdaad van iedereen ...

cactusfestival - 06.080707

friday - mintzkov opens, and opens good ... the singer looks like he partied the whole night before, as did b, but the songs weren't tired or tiresome, best songs are those where the base-player sings along, which she should do more often ... after some good flemish stew the soulsavers feat mark lanegan, i doubt whether a soul can be saved by that voice, but the music was ok, and mark's voice, yeah, dark en deep ... a small gesture with his hand towards the audience and ... gone ... next cake, we had the company of some die-hard (space)cake fans who follow them around and took us to the third row, where we had a good time ... no setlist, very fun music, little hits (i didn't recognize more than two songs), but great atmosphere ... and, sheep go to heaven, goats go to hell! ... during the waterboys we visited the tea-tent, and only near the end we arrived back at the stage, too bad, because their music sounded really good, still some time to party on the final songs ... and to party after ...

saturday - only two bands today ... first some longer-than-planned terrace sitting, sightseeing of bruges, getting lost in the labyrinth of loppem, and the first mussels of the season (yummie!) ... after these mogwai, the start was rather melodic, near the end the heavier songs came out ... a good digestive ... then the gotan project, finally the opportunity to see them live, and here the setting was already ok, a stage with a rather small audience in a park (the concept of the festival, more space around the stage than in front) ... genial ... the band in white suits and dresses, nice visuals, and the bandoleon with a beat underneath ... it works out great ... fusion kitchen is in, fusion music as well ... now i saw them live, still have to find a party where their music fills the dancefloor ... i bet you look good on it ...

sunday - buffalo tom, as with the name, the gig was ok, i remember the line 'just a little haiku to say how much i love you' ... being a songwriter, you can come up with funny things, maybe i should consider a change of career ... next tom mcrae, with only acoustic guitar, cello and piano, 'i will depress the fuck out of you' he promised, but the music sounded too good to do that, he could even come back to play one more ... afterwards we looked for three men in black getting drunk, but no sign of them ... then gabriel rios, not really entertaining, some good songs, but when things get started it slows down again, the best thing were all the laser pointers which started appearing ... who the **** sold these today? nobody, it turned out ... they were part of the flaming lips show ... and what a show that was :-) , confetti, big blue balloons - i managed to catch three, and could have had more if my company let me - aliens on stage, a drummer who looked like straightly escaped from madhouse, a huge video screen, a singer appearing in a big balloon above the hands of the audience ... and great music ... before the yeah yeah yeah song, their own (little) protest song, he was talking about us politics and said 'imagine bush is the ruler of your country' ... somebody replied, bwa, we're stuck with yves leterme here ... you see, there's still hope ... the pointers were part of a laser game in the middle of a song, reflecting the red beams back to the audience ... balloons kept falling down, but all the crazy things happening on stage were never hampering the music ... at the end, everybody left with one big smile on the face ... so people, go, enjoy, and smile !!

rock werchter - 2806.010707

unintended - milow quicked off in the marquee, a crowd ready for 4 days of sex, drugs and rock&roll (quote of p) is like an open goal, you just have to kick the ball in, and they did ... good songs, one remark though, if you cover mia, keep it dutch, 'mia has seen the light' just does not sound, could be that it's just classical conditioning in this case, but (i like to believe that) a part of the strength of gorki (and de mens, noordkaap, ...) are the dutch lyrics ... they made it up with born in the eighties, a song for the most of us ... with air you could float a bit away, a good distraction, which we also had ... marilyn manson wouldn't be worth mentioning here if it weren't for the sound that went out a couple of times, as i was in spanish company we all yelled fuera to the sound guys, but hey, maybe they just didn't like the music, same here ... bjork started with earth intruders, but it was not the blast i expected it to be (the cd version is better), a highly enjoyable gig, even when she sang in icelandic with only clavichord-like support, she went out with declare independece, raise you flags ... which we did, as next, muse landed ... and what a landing ... again in front, grasping for air, the perfect gig, and unintended in the bis-round, they even bring gifts ...

uniform - people come on, the van jets openend, and were ok, go and see them, then jason mraz, one man with a guitar on stage, and he did well, nice gig ... oi va voi apparently has a new violin player, and, i have to say, she can stay ... kings of leon played without passion, on call for example was not wat it could be ... next the kaisers, always highly energetic, but the thought that it all sounds a bit average nowadays crossed my mind ... then block party, waaaw, and still room to improve, the new songs, early in the set could be more punchy ... uniform goes 'i'm a believer, i just need a moment' ... this was a moment ... next, sun broke through the clouds, wat een heerlijk gevoel, al die zon zon op je smoel (imagine translating this), then the queens of the stoned age, which sums it up ... here is a song that you've not heared before, josh goes in the middle of the gig, and first thing you hear is the riff of no one nows, again, great, this is the rock in the festival's name ... after that, the monkeys, third time now, and better again, the setlist a mix of their two cds, and chapeau, it all sounds great and kicks ass, and alex more talkative (still not much though, but hey, remember the pixies, if the music speaks for itself and you have enough good songs, who cares) ... 'if i could chose the life i please then i would be a boatman', one of my (youth)favorite bands sing ... if i could chose the life i please then i would be a monkey, an arctic one ... headliner was pearl jam, but i didn't like it ... the soundmix was awful ... i hope this is not how grunge used to sound ...

oh la la la - third day already, first one to mention is amy winehouse, what a great couple of voices ... i read in a review 'blabla, and she had difficulties locating the music-company people', but hey, i stood in front and she was just waving to people shouting amy amy you're great ... arriving 20 minutes to late (which gave me 2 secs of screen time), adjusting the setlist on stage, and drinking 2 longdrink-somethings, i don't mind if you sing like that ... then klaxons, a magic marquee moment, the right atmopshere for the audience to make the performance better ... and goose, revelation last year between the trees of boomtown, now even better, extreme hard, powerful (sweat all around) and short, which allowed me to go and see the killers, which were just introing read my mind, a very nice song indeed ... then the topper of the festival, arno ... what a performer, most of the time you don't understand what he's singing, but you feel it, and what a sound the guitarist produces ... goose bumps with les yeux de ma mere, with piano only ... and then, oh la la la ... sounded better than the countless times i enjoyed this song at countless parties ... the marque on fire ... after that the good the bad and the queen were a welcome break, with just good music (that base !) and a cozy setting (a curtain with london of the 19th century, high hats, four big stage lights, a bottle of whiskey) ... the chemical brothers were (way) too silent and too psychedelic at the end (which i wouldn't mind at a different place - not open air - and at a different time - not end of third day -)

evil - cold war kids in the marquee, here a perfect time and place to get to know them, and they were very good, the festival discovery, and also the best line (in expensive tastes): 'i like to be there / in the morning / when you wake up' ... then a discussion on is this pop werchter ? (kooks and maximo park at the same time, luckily the beer stand was not far) ... then interpol, great music, also live, also the new numbers (super new cd!!) ... but this is music for the night, when criminals walk the streets ... the downside of these big festivals, the gaps in the timetable have to be filled in ... nevertheless i enjoyed, even though it's an evil world ... to the marquee for damien rice, again great (those two words are a pretty good summary of the festival), he starts with 9 crimes, rather quickly solo on the piano, after that's away time (for us) to focus on the other songs ... nice ... then metallica, first half lots of old songs, i stood too far to enjoy those properly but encountered an old classmate, nice chatting and some free analysis, thanks for that ;), and then master, fireworks, one, seek, destroy, sad, true, and eeeeeexit light, and exit tent ... for which also thanks :)

arno - enlève ta langue / from zero to hero heroes / mourir a plusieurs / no job no rock / meet the freaks / i'm not into hop / ratata / que pasa / les yeux de ma mère / with you / mon sissoyen / bathroom singer / miss amérique / oh lalala / putain putain / les filles du bord de mer
cold war kids - we used to vacation / passing the hat / st. john / new song / dirt in the ground - hospital beds / god make up your mind / expensive taste / rubidoux / dreams old men dream / hang me up to dry
interpol - pioneer to the falls / slow hands / narc / say hello to the angels / mammoth / rest my chemistry / obstacle 1 / leif erikson / the heinrich maneuver / evil / not even jail / pda

zita swoon - motel mozaique - 130407

where do i start where do i begin ...

a year ago, same festival, same place, the rotterdam schouwburg, different setting, a band in a middle of the hall & people sitting all around ... first everyone keeps seated, but after a couple of songs, someone stands up, some more follow, stef says 'ja, er mag gedanst worden' and then the whole audience jumps up ... after that, it's dancing & experiencing with one big smile on the face ... crazy ... a band in a box is the concept & concert of 06 ... close to the people, songs in a funky jacket, voices of three angels ... i remember first listening to a song about a girls, it was jan 05, i was in the hot & sweaty santa cruz, bolivia, back then, glad i could listen to some belgian music, but it didn't impress me much ... maybe it was the heat, maybe the spanish atmosphere, or maybe it was just too early and i had to see these songs being performed live & like this, here they all fall into place and make you swing ... and listening to that album now brings back the big smile ...

this year, they climbed back up the stage, one angel less, but one hell of an album more ... in this big city the songs already breath that now typical zita swoon feeling ... live, it all sounds and looks great ... and they swing even more now, and you as well ... nice b-day concert, read more here (3voor12)

hey you, whatshadoing / me & josie on a saturday night / i feel alive in the city / intrigue / thinking about you all the time / l'opaque paradis / hot hotter hottest / everything is nog the same / remember to withhold / planet: disco / stamina / infinite down / big city // jintro & the great luna / the night

pukkelpop - 17.190806

exit music - straight to the marquee for guillemots, chaotic pop, but good songs in between, although maybe a too big tent, i saw them earlier at motel mozaique in a small nighttown room, and there the atmosphere fitted better, but hey, it's pp, at three o'clock in the afternoon you're not complaining ... next the electro-rock grooves of the infadels, nice party ... then the magic number until forever lost, what a singing, and then off to the dance hall, for the knife, a great weird show, and the deep beats with that high voice (of royksopp's what else is there) do the job ... then snow patrol with only guitars (instruments were still in heathrow, a consequence of the bombs in tubes which lead to the silly 1 liter bag rule now), felt like campfire but they got away with it ... my morning jacket opened a bit too loud in the marquee, and then a cross of the field towards the club, where from a distance i could already hear the zoo keepers boy, what a song and what a timing ... the rest of mew's songs were also ok, good danish export ... beck brought a nice gimmick, little puppets resembling the artists and acting in funny movies before the bissround (they walked around pp during the day) ... and then ... the longest half an hour of my life ... in front of the main stage waiting for radiohead ... suddenly the radio 1 news intro, mixed with airbag, and they departed for a great journey through great music ... everything was perfect, the sound, the visuals (broken screens behind the band), the setlist ... impressive ... is this the best band of these times? tonight they proved to come close ...

group four - gogol bordello, a gipsy party in the marquee, if you see them, go as close to the stage as you can and enjoy ... then the dears, some good songs but not really convincing ... confuse the cat didn't either, akela is a great song, but that's it ... be your own pet on the contrary, 30 minutes punk in the club, average age 16, the girl-singer screeming higher and faster, guitarist jumping in the public and loosing a shoe, second time i saw them, second time i was highly amused ... another racounteurs gig as well, and again great rock, glad this still exists ... then the twilight singers with mark lanegan, wow, this is after twilight, even deep dark night music, this is how a live gig should be, raw, passionate ... my girl, my girl, don't lie to me, tell me, where did you sleep last night ... headliner was massive attack ... monumental it was ... what ... a ... trip ... from risingson till the fabulous final group four, which kept going on, faster and faster, musical highness

technologic - the roger sisters, playing early in the club, had some nice songs ... joan as policewoman idem ... foxylane was one hot crazy party in the wablief tent ... the surprise of pp then, 65 days of static, progrock, mogwai-guitars combined with keyboard and some drum&base rythms ... the marquee was too small for zita swoon, so i followed it from outside and up side down ... then the artic monkeys, what a gig and what a vibes, even the rain could not temper the pleasure, plastic rain coats were trashed ... so young and so good, what's more? ... now we already know, an even better second disc ... belle and sebastian was the perfect last group for the marquee, this is music with capital m ... daft punk closed the festival with a greatest hit mix, and what a contrast with the previous band, 2 people high in a pyramid ... but what do they do exactly up there? maybe just press the start and stop button ... but still, you can not resist ... music's got me feeling so free, we gonna celebrate, celebrate and dance are free ...

radiohead - airbag / national anthem / there there / where i end and u begin / exit music (for a film) / karma police / nude / i might be wrong / mixomatosis / paranoid android / no surprises / the gloaming / all i need / pyramid song / just / idioteque / how to disappear completely / like spinning plates / you and whose army / lucky / fake plastic trees / everything in it's right place
65 days of static - drove through ghosts to get here / 541 / i swallowed hard like i understood / await rescue / install a beak in the heart, that clucks time in arabic / 65 doesn't understand you / retreat! retreat! / radio protector
massive attack - risingson / black milk / butterfly caught / mezzanine / teardrop / angel / future proof / safe from harm / intertia creeps / unfinished sympathy / group four
belle and sebastian - act of the apostle / funny little frog / like dylan at the movies / sukie in the graveyard / le pastie de la bourgeoisie / electronic renaissance / lord anthony / for the price of a cup of tea / simple things / the blues are still blue / jonathan david / white collar boy

elections - 100607

(some thoughts) the pendulum of power (can someone calculate the period? around 8 years it seems) / doesn't the statement 'goed bestuur' imply that the earlier administration was bad? if so, was it that bad? (i don't think so), if not, isn't this what being a politician is about (then why mentioning) / a prime minister should have and share a vision (that's, amongst others, why i liked guy), not a public preference for westfleteren (although i must admit that it is damn good beer) / the more parties, the more difficult decision making becomes (i am against small parties ... in essence, i'm in favour of a two-party system, because, admit, there is only i agree - i disagree with a policy, or only progression - conservatism, or only black - white)

sophia - paard van troje - 230207

great gig ... i only knew pace, the single from their latest disc, by then, and i was pleasantly surprised ... from i left you, the yelling opener, through the sea, a beautiful last song (even nicer with the sea only some miles away), until the loud & noisy -3 guitars- bisses ... see http://www.sophiamusic.net/ontour/20070223.htm for a full review and some pictures

afterwards they showed up at the bar, and i asked if they would join the belgian festival-summer, the marquee at werchter would be a good place i added ... that's not our kind of festival, the frontman replied, but i think we'll do pukkelpop ... and indeed, they're playing on the friday ... check'em out

the sea (de nachten disc) - come to the sea my darling come to the sea my love follow me my angel from the darkness of our world / follow me my darling follow me my love come with me my angel far from our world from our world / come with me my darling come to the sea my love come with me my angel from the darkness of our world / come with me my baby come with me my love come with me my darling far from our world / come to the sea my darling come to the sea my love come with me my angel far from our world from our world

rock werchter - 2906.020706

first day - tool and manu chao ... not as impressive as 5 years ago (rw01), when both of them also staged the first day, tool blew me away then, and the whole manu chao gig was una fiesta grande ... anyway tool still blows away and manu chao still builds a good party ... but whenever the first time you see a band leaves you amazed, it's difficult later to get it better ... next the rhcp, not the best live-performing band (tool comes close there), but close to the best live band ... their funk music is perfect for a big stage and they play with such a funky pleasure, which makes it a great gig ... best moment: how deep is your love solo by john frusciante ... the black eyed peas finished the day, where i stood in front to admire fergies humps

second day - a brand opened well ... next good editors, curious to see and hear more of them ... then elbow, amazing, beautiful music in the pyramid, the applause after forget myself seemed to last forever, and the gig was not even over ... mogwai a bit too early on the day, funny moment: one of the band members was a bit too soon in opening the distortion, he quickly stopped his outburst ... muse was the top of the four days, as you can read in another post ... and with a 2 many party the night started

third day - a great day - wolfmother (what a haircut), arsenal (yeahaa), the monkeys (i stood a bit too far to enjoy it properly, but at pp i have made it up), the chiefs (a riot it was), the raconteurs (good first disc and gig, two vocalists/guitarists add up, check the nana-mouskouri lookalike bass player), the franz ferdinand (1-0 for scotland, but a bit too much of the same) ... and then, goldfrapp in the marquee ... hot (the weather) hot (the background dancers) hot (the girl in front), the most sexy gig up till now ... ooh la la ... what a show ... the next day she couldn't perform at roskilde, maybe she gave us too much ... deus as headliner, from theme from turnpike (mauro getting mad) to roses (thank you) one big home victory ... after that a great party between the entry fences ... por la carretera !!!

fourth day - better then the day before was not possible, so now it was sit back and relax - strange gig of eels, two guitars and drum, and a security guy doing crazy stuff, but the music (fast rock) was not really convincing, or maybe the sun was just shining too hard ... next some listening from under the trees, a bit boring hard-fi, and fun scissor sisters, but i found myself waiting to be comfortably numb, which only happened then ... as end of the festival a greatest hit show of depeche mode, funny to see the old hits being recognised and sung along by the first half of the audience ... i, after four days, enjoyed the silence ...

rhcp - can't stop / dani california / scar tissue / charlie / fortune faded / warlocks / parallel universe / snow / me and my friends / wet sand / right on time / don't forget me / how deep is your love / tell me baby / californication / by the way
elbow - station approach / red / leaders of the free world / fugitive motel / mexican standoff / the good day / mcgreggor / forget myself / the stops / new born

munich - 22.270507

proposition #1: if you do not have access to a wiki easily, don't let a discussion take longer then 10 minutes OR if you have done something wrong ... you should not talk

the prisoner's dilemma - two suspects of a delict are offered separately the same deal by the police, who have insufficient evidence to frame them. if they both keep silent, they get a minor sentence (eg 6 months). if one betrayes the other, he walks freely and the other gets the maximum sentence (eg 10 years). if they both talk however, they both get a sentence, less than the maximum amount (eg 5 years) ... what will they do ? what will you do ?

muse - sportpaleis - 191206

what what what what a band a songs a live performance an energy

my first encounter with muse was the summer of 01, when i saw them at rock werchter and pukkelpop ... those were the days of backpacking, two months vacation, greek salads, two towers still standing and the origin of symmetry in between ... at rw i didn't know them yet and i was at once sold and wrapped and i linked it to myself ... i was happy to see them again a month and a half later ... next time was in munich (zenith - 281003) during the absolution tour ... a disc which accompagnied my thesis writing

and then came rw06, black holes was not out yet here, i wanted to stand in front, which i did & still know of ... it felt like war in the middle of a bombing ... after three songs i was longing for a quiet one, to stand still and be able to breath again, and so on ... lots of songs of the new album (half of the setlist), which i didn't know by then but the frontpeople around me could sing along word for word ... map of the problematique, starlight, invincible, knights of cydonia all stood like a statue ... and i took a bow

the tuesday after the disc was reviewed in humo and got a bad critique (too much over the top, more blabla), the tuesday after the review of rw was published in humo, and the critique of a week ago was backed down ... it read 'forget what was written last week, the new songs sound amazing live and muse is on top of it all' ... the rest is -recent- history: the black holes tour sold out easily and now they are headlining festivals ... will they still play at the age of 60 ? what revelations will we know by then ?

the antwerp gig was the last one of the tour, so we got a bit longer setlist (hooray) and a muse in shape ... i remember lights, lights and more lights, and this on a dark december night ... and you-and-i-must-fight-for-our-rights-you-and-i-must-fight-to-survive ... quite a message to go home with and celebrate xmas ...

take a bow / map of the problematique / butterflies and hurricanes / supermassive black hole / new born / assassin (extended) / city of delusion(with trumpet) / forced in / bliss / feeling good / hoodoo / invincible / time is running out / plug in baby / soldier's poem / starlight / hysteria / stockholm syndrome / muscle museum / knights of cydonia (setlists & more on www.microcuts.net)

one night on earth ... late in the bis-round ... beautiful song ... and so true: 'your face, it will not be back again' and 'now the wolves all howled' ... i howled along, and m, i drank some duvels for you ... and i will drink some more, i promise ...

my first guestlist-gig, it should be something to make me happy ... but that's not what i'm thinking of these moments ... still the story is worth telling ... they played in the velvet music store in the afternoon, an in-store free short gig, only the singer and drummer ... nice voice and songs ... afterwards i talk with someone of the band (turned out to be the guitarplayer ... and a lookalike from far ??) and tell him i want to go to the sold-out gig later that evening ... give me your name, i see what i can do he tells me ... so i do ... then in the evening i decide to go and give it a try, i didn't feel like staying home anyway ... i take one entrance, ask is there a guestlist, yeah, it's at the other one, ok, i go there, pass the bear in costume and go to a girl in a chair with a list ... if everything went well i should be on that i say, what's your name she asks and at that moment i see my name there... here, i point ... what a feeling ... and what a gig ... a small hall and a big band, a great combination ... great to enjoy, listen and think of nothing ... except maybe your face ...

deus - paradiso - 251005

the gods must be crazy ... and with mauro and alain even more weirdo ... great ceremony in the amsterdam rock temple ... the first time i saw them, the best up till now (later followed rock werchter and the 0110 concert) ... because of the determination, the energy and the venue ... serpentine as closing-prayer, and suds&soda to leave us fully exhausted and gaga ... although i have to admit i like rose at the end more, like at the other 2 events ... we got the regular pocket-revolution tour setlist, see http://pocketrevolution.blogspot.com/ or below

vienna - 18.210407

put your hands up for (detroit), our lovely city ... dance tracks are good for more than sweating around ... wide, majestic streets with six-floor buildings / gardens to relax / nice beerglasses / the melange, a cappucinno for the whole day / sausage-stands / chelsea and other bars around / the MQ / more museums ...

which brings me seamlessly to these artist: klimt (museums shouldn't use big works as their ads, once you've experienced them live, and see them then back on posters all around the city, the effect is a bit screwed) / kokoschka (tiger lion) / pierre bonnard / makart (fuenf sinne) / max oppenheimer (the philharmonic orchestra) / willem de kooning / yves klein ... on whom there was also a temporarily exhibition in the mq ... if blue is one of your favorite colours: go, see and admire / tamara de lempicka / and ekaterina more, a nowadays artist, which hung in a gallery on a corner ...

daniel johnston - paard van troje - 150407

strange gig ... two parts, first solo on guitar, but his guitarplay is not really fantastic (in tuning his guitar, after entering the stage, the guitarist of the opening band came to help) ... he has a high pitch voice, a kind of neil young voice, which makes his songs sound ok ... for the second part the opening band (muttfish if i remember correctly) joined him, and that added value ... the drive of the band and support for his songs was missing in the first part ... i like the idea of having the opening band supporting the main singer ... the next day he played at the AB with das pop as support ... and for once i agree with the standaard-review ...

absynthe minded - paard van troje - 240307

before going we enjoyed a delicious - i can recomend the duvel and garlic combination - mussels diner which got a tail, w, next time, you're also invited :)

the gig was good, but i saw them already better in action at boomtown during the gentse feesten - still enjoying their cover of i'm waiting for the man of the velvet back then -, also the crowd was a bit dutch, so chatting and talking the whole time ... even during the beautiful, stfu!, my heroics ... nevertheless, great live band ... and good new songs ... like ask me anything: i gotta go i got a better view on the other side of town

ps the day after gabriel rios was in de laatste show, and when asked what the biggest difference was between playing in .be of .nl, he replied the silence of the crowd, in .nl sometimes i can't even hear my own instrument ...

arcade fire - stubru.uit - 070407

they were not part of the official schedule, but suddenly around 4:40, during the dj-set of Starski&Tonic, you could hear the bells coming in the background ... and then ... sleeping is giving in, no matter what the time is ... sleeping is giving in, so lift those heavy eyelids ... three minutes of singing dancing smiling dancing and everything but giving in ... a beauty of a song, and i saw her there ...

before that: the fixkes in the theaterzaal, in chairs on the balcony almost above the stage ... their songs reflect some recognizable things and sound perfect in that stabroeks dialect ... what to think of a song like "ik hoop da ze mij wa mist, da z'een heel klein bitje ongelukkig is" ... zuper ... check'em out on http://myspace.com/stabroek

and the admiraal ... rocking in the dark world ... great & long version of the ever present, his best song to date ... this is my moment ... this is my joy
and daan ... the new songs feel good live ... as does the swaying of isolde's ponytail :) ... nice to hear jamais neutral (cinema-disc) in the regular setlist ...

pixies - pukkelpop - 190805

one word ... amazing ... 28 songs in about 1.5 hours ... some songs less than 2 minutes long ... the gig flies by ... kim deal constantly with a sigaret hanging from her lips ... black francis not saying a word to the audience, suddenly he goes yeaaah, we all are aha he's talking to us ... nope ... the shout was part of the next song ... great ... more ... please ...

other good gigs these days: annie / audio bullys / franz ferdinand / grimbergenstand / viva voce / arsenal

and de mens in a small tent ... another amazing gig and end of the festival ... the audience keeps on shouting "irene, niemand heeft ooit zo mooi, neen tegen mij gezegd", even when the roadies start their job ... in full light they come a last time to greet us ... later that night, at the campingsite you could here everywhere the same line ... superb ... en 't is waar, niemand heeft ooit zo mooi neen tegen mij gezegd ...

bad points: i missed the arcade fire ... by then i didn't know them yet, so i was warming up for the pixies ... afterwards i heard and read that their show was highly entertaining ... unforgivable ...

arsenal - boomtown gentse feesten - 250705

my first arsenal gig, not the last, super, great music, party atmosphere ... later when one of the guys at pukkelpop is asked what the best gig of the summer was for them, he hesitates for a moment (stupid question) and then answers, yeah maybe gent ... i shout boomtown ... he goes yeaaaah gent rules ... it does !

later i see them at the lokerse feesten, martkrock, pukkelpop, bal fatal and eventually in the AB

personne ne bouge car déjà tous blessé ... i jumped a lot

green day - rock werchter - 010705

my first entry ... my first memory ...

american idiot tour, show was not idiotic at all, they punk, at certain moment drummer, base and guitar player picked out of audience ... the drum-girl knew how to hit them ... ends with i hope you had the time of your life ... in any case a good time!

before them garbage played on the main stage, i stood well in front, shirley was crawling on stage, they sounded like never been gone and i felt like standing in my backyard, only with a huge stage in it :)

can you read me ...

can you hear me ...

hi all, welcome on this little curiousity page which i wanted to start already some time ago. that's why the next posts will go back in time. the main task of this blog is to collect my concert-memories ... as i frequently enjoy live gigs i find myself afterwards searching for setlists and reviews, but i never keep the lists and never write down some impressions myself ... and a month later i want to see again what they played and think back what i thought of it ... so i decided to collect these memories here ... and as they come, they will be joined by other thoughts as well ... because music is life ...
