zita swoon - ab - 101209

15 years zita swoon .. a big cake, and hooray .. superb gig, starting with stef solo on guitar, and always more band members joining him, first the two singers, for an amazing whatshedoing, until the full band is on stage .. lot's of great moments, a bit like all of the past zita swoon gigs .. i think this is the band i saw the most the past years, and always they were amazingly entertaining and never the same .. guest appearances of john parish, arno and tom barman today, see the video of deus' great american nude here below

editors - vorst nationaal - 071109

i swear to God, in this light and on this evening, this gig's become the most beautiful thing i've seen .. which says it all .. amazing gig .. already the second song , an end has a start, was worth to be the last .. and that happened more during the gig, which was a perfect mix of old and new (more electronic, more spatial) songs .. favorites was the racing rats, sounding like an anthem, like we know we are lost but editors will guide us .. and in this light and on this evening, they did .. even the fire at the end of papillon worked, thanks to the grim on the face of tom smith .. most fun was the reaction of the base player, lots of time applauding for us :) great, such an enthusiasm

in this light and on this evening / an end has a start / bullets / you don't know love / bones / the racing rats / the boxer / lights / blood / escape the nest / the big exit / eat raw meat = blood drool / camera / you are fading / smokers outside the hospital doors / bricks and mortar // walk the fleet road / munich / fingers in the factories / papillon

espers / cave singers - vooruit - 061109

first espers, unknown but nice, 2 acoustic guitars, one electric, cello and base & drum .. so gentle floating songs, the audience seated, which they didn't mind, and asking them back, what apparently didn't happen that often .. then the cave singers, surprised to see they only are 3, on record it sounds like there are more in their cave .. the great (& fast) guitarplay and the singer's twisting voice makes this a fine little band, which is nicely illustrated by their fantastic helen

soulsavers ft mark lanegan - vooruit - 041109

(again) a last minute saving of the soul, with a little help from a friend with a deep dark voice .. here beneath some favorites of tonight's gig

arctic monkeys - lotto arena - 031109

not my favorite venue, but one of my favorite bands, so here we are .. starting magnificent with lots of smoke, yellowish back-light .. six songs in a row, quite a difference to the slow pp-set .. then a small break and alex going reeeeady and looking good on the dance floor .. a bit further in the set 'are you enjoying? we're gonna slow down the pace though' and propelling into crying lightning, and we all going like we know that little game ... again a bit further some tuning and a quick stroke on his guitar and 'you know what that sound means', indeed, he's a scumbag, don't you know .. nice gig, well balanced between new and old songs, favorites were strangely all new songs, like pretty visitors with alex crooning, dangerous animals with alex once so into his guitarplay forgetting to sing along with d .. a .. n and so on, and the jeweler's hands, with amazing drumming, ten times more powerful than on cd .. only the confetti at the end of secret door didn't fit, wonder who came up with that (i repeat, only the flaming lips and sigur ros come away with it) ..

dance little liar / brianstorm / this house is a circus / still take you home / i bet you look good on the dancefloor / dangerous animals / the view from the afternoon / sketchead / my propeller / if you were there, beware / crying lightning / pretty visitors / cornerstone / do me a favour / the jeweller's hands / when the sun goes down / secret door // fluorescent adolescent / 505

the dead weather on later - 011109

(and enjoy the high contrast photography as well)

massive attack - lotto arena - 241009

a last minute ticket, a pleasant journey, but unfortunately not that good a destination this time .. lot of new songs, not having the same impact as the older work .. a guitar which was at times too screamy, making something like rockhop of it, and as that sounds, not that good .. intertia not creeping, teardrop in a new jacket, while the old version is just perfect, daddy g not inspired on stage, and small textscreens which were hampering the enjoyment .. luckily the second half of the gig became better, with an amazing safe from harm (with the superb line 'but if you hurt what's mine, i'll sure as hell retaliate') and new song marrakech ..

bulletproof love / hartcliffe star / 16 seeter / risingson / red light / future proof / teardrop / psyche / mezzanine / angel / safe from harm / inertia creeps // splitting the atom / unfinished sympathy / marrakech // karmacoma

new season of later ... - 150909

with this new epic muse tune

krakow & shearwater - vooruit - 100909

krakow first, a short set (8 songs in total i guess), a mix of their two albums .. great music, working really well in vooruit's ballroom, ending with dinosaur, reminding me of neil young, so not bad, not bad at all

then shearwater, never heard or saw them before, and they were great .. the singer's voice is astounding, ranging far, en he sings quite expressively, which pulls you into the music, which is, i have to say, not bad at all

and another one, great xylophone song, with drummer and base both playing one and hitting each others keys ..

pokkelpop - 20.220809

hot hotter hottest & people peopler peoplest, it's so true what they say, the kiewit meadow is getting too small ... and to program is getting too good ... in the end three days around, thanks to the surprise visit of mr grohl and his friends ... superstar djs, here we go ...

the last bit of dizzee's bonkers (luc janssens at the end: pukkelpop, jullie waren bonkers) on the way to the bony king, losing gravity is such an amazing song (could've been radiohead) ... a bit of la roux, but she sounded a bit too much the same, so on the way to the marquee, to be in front for them crooked vultures, where wilco was playing, what a discovery, nice music, nice musicians, see the lowlands review (where the order was reversed) ... then, a packed marquee, and when the vulture on the base drum became visible, a sight of relief and a first round of applause ... so here are them crooked vultures, without knowing any song, it was entertaining and good, sometimes good songs, mosttimes good jamming, and how nice to see dave drumming, i remember his twist of the pulse to hit two different cymbals ... and the roadie moving his microphone when he needed to sing ... no name dropping, just pointing to introduce the band members and receive lots of applause ... great surprise, great gig ... a bit of ladyhawke, and again too much the same, so beirut, which was probably good, but i was still in rock mode ... so off to faith no more (must be one of the best group names ever, it says it all), and what was that, the reunion of the decade, pointed to by starting with a very kitschy reunited (and it feels so good) and the kicking off, crazy ... mike patton running around like a boxer, shouting and singing like a mad man ... then a crazy stage diver in the middle of midlife crisis, which they interrupted for a moment, mike checking it out, and returning how i'm in a bad mood now, and whistling something cheerful, to return to midlife crisis again ... if it wasn't a real mad man jumping, it could've been part of the show ... it was a very good gig ... to end the day, my bloody valentine, who made bleed my ears with the sound level three times what it is allowed to be, after putting napkins in my ears, someone was distributing better ear plugs, from then on, great, and because i can't say it better (specially the melancholic blue dress, to see her better, i moved even closer to the speakers), read here

day two, das pop opening, bent again the best man dressed, see the charlatan review, there the balloons fitted better, now the guitarist little daughter was dancing so charming at the side of the stage ... next metric on the same main stage, with a great (blond and blue dressed) front lady, gimme sympathy she sang, with pleasure, catchy songs, and that one she dedicated to everyone with different plans and ambitions, hey, i felt spoken to ... next a bit of paul kalkbrenner, sky and sand early in the set, his just received gold record in the air, great lounge tune ... then the airborne toxic event, maybe the best gig of the three days, with the violist jumping in the audience and on the amplifiers, but more important great songs, and a great response, leaving the singer amazed, i wrote these songs in my bedroom, strange to be here in front of so much people ... then glasvegas, also amazed by the same response, but the first half of their gig was a bit monotone, luckily it became better, with daddy's gone at the end, superb song ... then vampire weekend, last part of the marquee hat trick, a near perfect gig, their debut album songs sounded richer and more punchy, good new ones, and a-punk is a class of its own, already the intro is fabulous ... a bit of snow patrol, who have good songs and apparently likes deus, and we, the people, didn't stop singing shut your eyes and follow me, great moment ... then squarepusher, strange things happening on a base, best guy dressed, with a fish hat and fluo rain jacket ... baby, did you forget to take your meds, no, so back to the marquee for deus ... and wow, this was the best deus gig i saw so far, great set list, an amazing instant street, and, indeed, a bigger surprise than dave on drums, hotel lounge (with help from snow patrol's singer), what a song, what a move, what an elevator ... the black lips to end the day, a crazy bunch of guys playing ok crazy rock tunes

last day, starting at the end with the long haired (is this in again?) monkeys ... i found it amazing (even in spite of the long pauses, hey, these guys are young, they need a break once in a while), great new songs, just listen to crying lightning and be amazed and afraid (that base) ... you feel their music (i do at least), and alex turner is by far the best song writer of the moment, and again, specially because i agree, see the lowlands review, and his fantastic way of pronouncing pokkelpop is the best ... this gig degrades everything earlier that day, which offered less then the days before, still some good stuff: edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros, made the club their home for a moment ... team william, gread pop songs, first snow is top class, and a fun moment when throwing the team paperpoard decoration in the audience, transforming it into a boat floating above the audience for a while ... dinosaur jr, good guitar songs ... klaxons, their debut album songs stay great, and sound a bit cure like at moments, which is never bad ... deus, starting with smokers reflect (difficult to do better from then on), a great bad timing and again, instant street, what a song ... and, the best surprise, florence and the machine, has a voice like kate bush, a harp on stage, and nice songs, and a nice band, which made us and the club witness a superb gig, for the last time, read here

in the end, again good to've been there, at pokkelpop ... what will next year's 25th edition bring ...

my propeller / red right hand / if you were there / crying lightning / potion approaching / pretty visitors / still take you home / dancefloor / brianstorm / house is a circus / dangerous animals / view from the afternoon / cornerstone / do me a favour / secret door / fluorescent adolescent / 505

bored - 180809

luckily music is in the air

corsica - 2807.060809

summarized in 4 songs

das pop - charlatan - 270709

das pop in the carlatan de luxe edition, during the gentse feesten, surprise gig, and a nice one ... punchy new and old (reworked) songs, and ending with an up tempo version of sinatra's it was a very good year

de staat - charlatan - 200709

quite a young big dutch band in an old small bar in gent, how, like more things, music has difficulties to cross borders ... but they're good indeed, i would describe them as a energetic crossover between arctic monkeys and queens of the stone age, with even a hint of the shadows (indeed) at some point, and some architect like songs ... so not bad at all ... entertaining, specially thanks to their energetic performance

sleep tight / you'll be the leader / habibi / my blind baby / were gonna die / meet de devil / fantastic journey / my heart's dead / i'm here to lose control / riverside // wait for evolution

arbouretum / bony king of nowhere - handelsbeurs - 190709

first part of boomtown at the gentse feesten is inside and to pay for, which i happily did for these 2 bands ...

great gig of arbouretum, their first time in gent, definitely have to come again ... first concert with my camera, see pics here, have to admit that i sometimes put it down to enjoy their great music ... next bony king, different sound, but nice as well, although bram, the lead singer, should work on talking to the audience, his music asks for something else or more than have you something to ask or we play a next one now, first encore was a solo acoustic, afterwards the whole band returned for another one ...

arbouretum: singpost and instruments / hiding place / tonight's a jewel / ghost of here and there / fall line / false spring / underneath the arches // another rites of uncovering song as encore

cactus - 110709

65 days of static early up in the afternoon, but they progrocked the place and the cactus audience appreciated that ... in between some other bands, but i came to see the gutter twins, only accompanied by an extra guitarist today ... great, they can come and play at my, hm, whatever ... favorite, resurrection song, see vid

rock werchter - 030709

a short friday visit to the holy field of werchter ... arriving a bit late, bloc party from far outside, then a bit of the killers from close by inside (same old songs), and off to the marquee for arsenal ... and whoow, again heads on, what a gig .. one word, lotuk !!! a tent exploding ... next today's headliner, coldplay ... a bit disappointing, during the first songs the sound and specially chris' voice was really bad ... clocks (world class song) sounding like old rusty watches ... luckily it became better, with chris having fun, playing some billy jean solo on the piano, also a surprise visit in the middle of the field, close where we were standing (too bad for the other half of the field) ... and enough good music to leave a decent impression (viva la vida, the scientist, fix you, lost, life in technicolor 2 -great song-), but too bad, not superb, as i've seen them before in antwerp's sportpaleis ...

blur - 010709

just saw their performance at this year's glastonbury, which was quite something ...
this is one of the great songs they played

new (short) dEUS stuff - 290609

you can't wait, can you ?

battle for the sun - 080609

as the battle for vlaanderen starts now (after yesterday's -to me- disappointing election results), let's put on some fine music, like the title track of placebo's new album, which has great repet repet repet repetitive lyrics

and another great new song, this time from eels ...

obama speaks in cairo - 040609

historic ? let's see ... some excerpts, full text, including where there was applause :) can be found here

1:10 P.M. (Local)

So long as our relationship is defined by our differences, we will empower those who sow hatred rather than peace, those who promote conflict rather than the cooperation that can help all of our people achieve justice and prosperity. And this cycle of suspicion and discord must end.

I know there's been a lot of publicity about this speech, but no single speech can eradicate years of mistrust, nor can I answer in the time that I have this afternoon all the complex questions that brought us to this point. But I am convinced that in order to move forward, we must say openly to each other the things we hold in our hearts and that too often are said only behind closed doors. There must be a sustained effort to listen to each other; to learn from each other; to respect one another; and to seek common ground.

As a boy, I spent several years in Indonesia and heard the call of the azaan at the break of dawn and at the fall of dusk.

For we have learned from recent experience that when a financial system weakens in one country, prosperity is hurt everywhere. When a new flu infects one human being, all are at risk. When one nation pursues a nuclear weapon, the risk of nuclear attack rises for all nations. When violent extremists operate in one stretch of mountains, people are endangered across an ocean. When innocents in Bosnia and Darfur are slaughtered, that is a stain on our collective conscience. That is what it means to share this world in the 21st century. That is the responsibility we have to one another as human beings.

Unlike Afghanistan, Iraq was a war of choice that provoked strong differences in my country and around the world... I also believe that events in Iraq have reminded America of the need to use diplomacy and build international consensus to resolve our problems whenever possible.

For decades then, there has been a stalemate: two peoples with legitimate aspirations, each with a painful history that makes compromise elusive ... But if we see this conflict only from one side or the other, then we will be blind to the truth: The only resolution is for the aspirations of both sides to be met through two states, where Israelis and Palestinians each live in peace and security.

Resistance through violence and killing is wrong and it does not succeed. For centuries, black people in America suffered the lash of the whip as slaves and the humiliation of segregation. But it was not violence that won full and equal rights. It was a peaceful and determined insistence upon the ideals at the center of America's founding. This same story can be told by people from South Africa to South Asia; from Eastern Europe to Indonesia. It's a story with a simple truth: that violence is a dead end. It is a sign neither of courage nor power to shoot rockets at sleeping children, or to blow up old women on a bus.

We cannot impose peace. But privately, many Muslims recognize that Israel will not go away. Likewise, many Israelis recognize the need for a Palestinian state. It is time for us to act on what everyone knows to be true.

Too many tears have been shed. Too much blood has been shed. All of us have a responsibility to work for the day when the mothers of Israelis and Palestinians can see their children grow up without fear; when the Holy Land of the three great faiths is the place of peace that God intended it to be; when Jerusalem is a secure and lasting home for Jews and Christians and Muslims, and a place for all of the children of Abraham to mingle peacefully together as in the story of Isra -- as in the story of Isra, when Moses, Jesus, and Mohammed, peace be upon them, joined in prayer.

But I do have an unyielding belief that all people yearn for certain things: the ability to speak your mind and have a say in how you are governed; confidence in the rule of law and the equal administration of justice; government that is transparent and doesn't steal from the people; the freedom to live as you choose. These are not just American ideas; they are human rights. And that is why we will support them everywhere.

I reject the view of some in the West that a woman who chooses to cover her hair is somehow less equal, but I do believe that a woman who is denied an education is denied equality.

(and, in my opinion the best line:)
I am convinced that our daughters can contribute just as much to society as our sons. (Applause.)

I know there are many -- Muslim and non-Muslim -- who question whether we can forge this new beginning. Some are eager to stoke the flames of division, and to stand in the way of progress. Some suggest that it isn't worth the effort -- that we are fated to disagree, and civilizations are doomed to clash. Many more are simply skeptical that real change can occur. There's so much fear, so much mistrust that has built up over the years. But if we choose to be bound by the past, we will never move forward. And I want to particularly say this to young people of every faith, in every country -- you, more than anyone, have the ability to reimagine the world, to remake this world.

It's a belief that pulsed in the cradle of civilization, and that still beats in the hearts of billions around the world. It's a faith in other people, and it's what brought me here today.

elbow & bruce springsteen - pinkpop - 300509

pinkpop ... the place where my festival awareness started thanks to the live broadcast on the dutch television, 2 great performances are grifted in my memory, both from the 96 edition, rage against the machine and radiohead, both illustrating the power and beauty of live music ... now, 13 years later, i finally made it to the landgraaf racetrack ...

first the noisette, which was mostly, noise ... then chris cornell, somewhere in the set a song he wrote in 91, the nice hunger strike, which is, frankly, the era he belongs to, confirmed even more with also black old sun at the end, dear programmers, more relevant things happen today ... next the killers, starting nicely with human, reminding me of this year's music for life, best the shadowplay cover (great base-line), as i prefer the remixes of their own songs ... giving me time to head to the smaller 3 fm stage, where elbow was performing, and again, a superb one, this time with two of my favorite seldom seen kid songs on the setlist, some riot (not seen anymore since the short gig about a year ago in a virgin store in nyc) and weather to fly, which they started gathered around the keyboard, cool! ... and then, my first bruce springsteen gig, and wow ... two and a half hours of great music & entertainment, thanks to the mix of the boss' strong songs and the fine musicians of the legendary e-street band (with the spookiest guy on stage, clarence clemons on sax) ... some highlights, opener badlands, although the sound was not optimal yet, outlaw pete ... can you hear me ... the request intermezzo (playing live on its best, making the setlist on the spot), nice to get to know some more songs, such as i'm on fire and trapped (of the we are the world benefit album), the little girl singing along on waitin' on a sunny day, the rising (lovely song indeed), golden oldies glory days and dancing in the dark, which everyone was doing ... i liked most the ghost of tom joad, a song i didn't know yet, of which i found a nice version, with tom morello from ratm ... closing the circle

badlands / out in the street / she's the one / outlaw pete / radio nowhere / working on a dream / seeds / johnny 99 / the ghost of tom joad / raise your hand / from small things / trapped / i'm on fire / thunder road / waitin' on a sunny day / the promised land / lonesome day / the rising / born to run // 10th avenue freeze-out / land of hope & dreams / american land / glory days / dancing in the dark

bat for lashes - melkweg - 160509

because i agree, and was too tired to do it myself, here are reviews from some colleagues (for the botanique show, which seems to have left the same impression): de morgen, goddeau, cutting edge and digg

my favorite was good love, and i can give our setlist: glass / sleep alone / horse and i / daniel (stripped down) / travelling woman / siren song / wizard / sarah / peace of mind / tahiti / what's a girl to do / pearls dream // prescilla / good love / moon and moon / two planets // daniel (full band)

lily allen - ancienne belgique - 080509

miss allen, who's picture by nadav kander i saw hanging in london's national portrait gallery just last week, in brussels tonight, opening with everything's at it, in an electro-trash version with a nice 4 step pirouette during the breaks, first on high heels, but these soon changed for white sneakers cause they hurt like hell, followed with a laugh, which she did often, a loud laugher, our lily ... then mostly songs of her new album, a mix of a hurt soul, like how she sang often, and a young woman knowing what she wants, which reflects in her personal & smart lyrics ... with the mic on the stand, she gets the most out of her voice, which was going from low (mine & wine) to high (smile & dreams) ... one time sounding a bit out of tune during ldn, maybe deliberately, like wanting it to be over, and (luckily) changing rapidly in go back to the start, sounding superb, with perfect timing in her singing on top of the rapid guitar strokes, and out of breath after jumping up, nice to see that live is live ... best her magnificent the fear, the middle fingers in fuck you, where is the time when i was shouting that in rage towards the stage, now with a smile and moving with the easy rhythm, her one time change of outfit, after the regular part of the set (which she ended with this is the last song and a wink), in a loose shirt and jeans, take a note of that, soul divas ... and the cigarette lit at the acoustic part of the set, never thought of that as something acoustic, and not out of pose but just to enjoy ... like beautiful lilies ...

doves - brixton academy (london) - 020509

thanks to the hospitality of peter, tine, jules and hannah i could go to and enjoy a gig of doves at the brixton academy, a nice & well known venue in the south of london, staged in a roman villa, with real artifacts according to doves' singer ... best opening i saw so far (in london), a video of a plane taking off, zooming out until only white lines are visible, to start with jetstream, also the first song of their great new album, the only one i knew till then, which didn't bother at all, as their older work sounded good as well, with pounding really, well pounding (see video at the bottom) ... nice video images of train traveling with 10.03, passing cooling towers, which look familiar somehow ... last song (according the singer) there goes the fear, their most famous one, with the great video on screen (see bottom as well), after which he left, but the rest of the band stayed, so after a short while he came back, probably remembering they would play a last song, the techno-like spaceface ... to end where they started, and fly ... up in the air

jetstream / snowden / winter hill / rise / pounding / almost forgot myself / 10.03 / words / the greatest denier / kingdom of rust / the last broadcast / black & white town / compulsion / the outsiders / caught by the river // northenden / here it comes / there goes the fear / spaceface

i'm in a state of shock - new sonic youth - 290409

what we know, yesterday in later ... unfortunately not yet found on youtube, when it is, i'll put it here as well ... sounded great ... hopefully soon on a stage near us ... one day later it's there, so enjoy !! ... they played three more songs on the friday show, including teenage riot, hooray !

on the same show, the lovely lily allen, who's performance is already on the net ...

great new singles - 230409

doves - kingdom of rust - after once listening you're already whistling along

bat for lashes - daniel - you feel the fire

inspiration - 220409

always nice to check out prize-winners, this time the pulitzer journalism ones ... the breaking news pictures are great but not my style (b&w, sometimes almost paintings), though in the feature photography winner's pictures i found some inspirational ones: yes we can !

motel mozaique - 100409

first the bony king of nowhere, see their gig in the ab for an impression ... great first album, live also worthwhile ... then an unknown swedish band, sounding ok and a folky lady, less convincing ... and then fever ray, and i can not say it better than on this 3voor12 review ... after which i headed home, enough on this good friday ...

mag ik u kussen - 060409

beetje reclame voor super pseudo-dating programma op canvas ...
hilarische aflevering, zeker met het onverwachte einde

girls in hawaii - not here - 060409

check the trailer, cado tip maybe :)

a world without nuclear weapons - 060409

when ???
but a nice picture of obama's speech in prague (in today's standaard), hopefully to admire
here, with a great and strange composition (by joe klamar, a slovakian photographer)

slik - 240309

how a photo can be both amazing and stomach-turning ... both 'de standaard' and 'de morgen' published it today in an article about the number of death penalties in 2008 by amnesty international, and good news, that number is slightly decreasing ... not that easy to find the picture (already taken in 2007), newspapers should besides the news agency also mention the photographer's name ...

john cale - paard - 140309

only 2 people on stage, john on big piano, keyboard and guitar (in that sequence) and dustin boyer on guitar (and occasional backing), his shoes were a bit off, but his guitarplay was certainly on, vivid and varied ... the two of them were more entertaining than lots of full band groups ... the first songs (on big piano) were already the best (over her head!!), while the others weren't bad at all, just a different sound (at the end two times acoustic guitar) ... he should've returned to that piano to play some more ... favorite was paris 1919 (keyboard then), stronger than below, thanks to the only 2 people on stage ... a song from 1973 ... so much more to discover ...

over her head / dying on the vine / buffalo ballet / the endless plain of fortune / chinese envoy / amsterdam / paris 1919 / e is missing / fear is a man's best friend / ghost story / whaddya mean by that / you know more than i know / ship of fools / things / gun / pablo picasso

cranes 1 - 130309

zita swoon: dancing with the sound hobbyist - rotterdam - 070309

in one word: great
in two words: amazing again
in more words: new show, without old work (nothing we recognized), all new songs/experiments, and a (modern) dancer and dancing of the zita band members (eva !), which resulted in a fascinating mix ... last song after i'm gone (something stef shouldn't consider yet), no bis unfortunately, in spite of the long (and well deserved) applause ...
particular moment: the piano jump, editor tom smith can already start practicing ...

invaders (must die) - 180209

great new track of the prodigy, and some pictures of invaders

bloc party - ab - 130209

first delphic, after their opening song we could predict that this wouldn't be it, and indeed, a mix of electro sounds, guitars and hard beats which was most of the time going nowhere, one song worth looking up, the underworld-like "this momentary", anyway, a group as the whip does similar things and sounds way better ... then bloc party, kicking off with one month off and kele and russel, the whole evening emphasizing they're still a rock band, gluing the riffs together, but halo not completing the previous, not as punchy as on intimacy, then positive tension, which remains -not- so fucking useless ... hunting for witches the first wake up call, how i needed that, they should've started with this one ... best was the duo song for clay flowing into banquet, which seemed a bit slower then normal, so not on fire at 110 degrees, 90 instead ... then an unnecessary letter to my son (kele on semi-acoustic, why ?), but greatly restored with mercury, my favorite this modern love - i'm often lost in forests and cut adrift - and the prayer, where the drummer, dressed only in some yellow short, the ab must have a good jacuzzi, kicked kele away from the microphone, and started the first line, nice ... coming back 2 times, sunday with 2 drums, didn't really see why, though it sounded ok and the line 'i love you in the morning when you're still hung-over' is first class, then flux the first high voltage end, and ares, what a great song, and like eating glass the last ones ... afterwards, for once i didn't drink poison ... a great gig, but not amazing, because sometimes not sparkling enough, and the setlist could've been better, no uniform and ion square unfortunately ...

't is gedaan - 080209

gutter twins - patronaat - 220109

a more boring opener than waiting in front of pukkelpop's 2006 main stage for radiohead ("the longest half hour of my life"), now 30 minutes variations of the same song by one guy and his guitar, which he wasn't playing but merely touching, and ok, the goldberg ones are an exploit of musical creativity, but this here was an awful waste of time ... luckily the rest of the evening with the gutter twins wasn't, stripped down today, greg (shifting between guitar and piano) and mark sitting down in front of their text sheets, accompanied with one guitarist ... kicking off with three saturnalia songs, standing strong in this folk-like approach with even more focus on the mix of their voices now, next we have met before from the ep adorata, great song ... after that older songs of their solo/band work, where those of mark stood out, such as resurrection song with nice high piano chords, one hundred days with the line "one days ship comes in", where you see one approaching from far, and sunrise, with the great opening lines "sunrise forgot to cover up my eyes sunrise should've covered up my eye", from the album with the evenly great title "whiskey for the holy ghost" ... to give also greg some credit, the lure would prove too much sounded good, and (red in some reviews) his out of tune voice is just the way he sings ... best part a conversation near the end of the set, where greg was reflecting back that he stood on the same spot some 16 years ago, asking mark whether he had played there before ... he thinks briefly, puts a slight smile on his face and goes "i can't remember" ...

eindelijk - 170109
