seven months - 241210

by portishead .. still on my to see list

and then experience this great song live

isobel campbell & mark lanegan - vooruit - 091210

great minds think alike they say, luckily great voices do not sound alike .. two nice
ones today on stage, around the corner, and they do have great music minds, because
i only know the first album, but the songs are such easy-listening and well played that
it doesn't matter whether you know them, you just enjoy the music .. below one of my
favorites, with mark in direct sunlight, and not vanishing ..

(athens setlist, 3 days later) we die and see beauty reign / you won't let me down again / come undone / snake song / who built the road / free to walk / honey child what can i do? / the circus is leaving town / to hell and back again / saturday's gone / back burner / time of the season / something to believe / salvation / come on over (turn me on) / get behind me // revolver / do you wanna come walk with me / ramblin' man / wedding dress

so you think - 121210

and thus exists, but here .. you can dance, my favorite performance of the final,
specially the almost mime-playing part at the end

the frames - botanique - 071210

from the unsurprisingly first headlong until favorite monument (with coats), with in between pavement tune - i want my life to make more sense, and a book for sale - and the stars are underground played as intensely as a new band would, to the closing prayer santa maria and fitzcarraldo, already asked by someone in the audience early in the gig, with a 'sure' reply of glenn, a concert to frame in, and listen to again and again .. my revelate ..

hey - 241110

are you awake?

jonsi - cirque royal - 221110

not as new and amazing as at pukkelpop, but still degelijk .. and fun to hear the story of
drinking orvals and the drummer losing his shoes .. and amazing music they create there
on stage, so in the end, it was .. with grow till tall a perfect final, his sigur bandmembers
should then appear and start playing along and for some hours, at least until at home
and at sleep .. now we had a cat ..

same song, same great artist, other atmosphere

the national - ab - 211110

about today, a lot can be said and written, but it's all so true music: you know i
dreamed about you, for 29 years before i saw you ..

and we'll explain everything to the GEEKS

runaway / anyone’s ghost / mistaken for strangers / bloodbuzz ohio / brainy / slow show / squalor victoria / afraid of everyone / available / conversation 16 / sorrow / apartment story / daughters of the soho riots / england / fake empire / about today // mr. november / terrible love / vanderlyle crybaby geeks

the tellers / school of seven bells - handelsbeurs - 041110

first school of seven bells, a mix of the xx atmosphere, a bat for lashes voice (and
nice cloaklike pullover) and a noisy guitar, so sounding good .. next get cape wear
cape fly, which he should have done, lots of music on tape, sounding a bit artificial ..
then the tellers on top of the bill, with totally new band, only the singer remained,
which is a bit of a pity, the great guitar riddles are somewhat gone, making place for
a more general sound .. luckily the singer's typical voice (and shoes) is still there

school: half asleep / babelonia / dust devil / ilu / windstorm / sempiternal
tellers: friend of mine / silent hills / memory / evil eye / more / i wish / mrammmnor /
like i say / ludo / so long / second category / c.a.i.

ghost of the rockschool - 031110

cool title, and another nice track of belle and sebastian's new album (and specially
at 2:40 in the song), great, and a nice autumn track, goes well with the coloured trees
i'm passing here

i want the world to stop - 311010

lovely track on belle and sebastian's new album write about love

lay my burden down - 181010

lovely song during the end credits of get low, a nice movie with robert duvall, bill
murray and sissy spacek

pianomania / igudesman and joo - 161010

we are nowhere - 131010

and it's now .. i'm in love with bright eyes' i'm wide awake it's morning record (and
that line in road to joy), and this is a great track from it .. he's on my list to see
once ..

and the lines "i've been sleeping so strange at night side effects they don't advertise
i've been sleeping so strange with a head full of pesticide" remind me of elbow's
station approach "i haven't been myself of late i haven't slept for several days" ..
them, i've seen there .. and yeah, i'm a bad sleeper :)

and the next lines "i've got no plans and too much time i feel too restless to unwind"
remind me of an exhibition i've seen, with a similar quote catching my attention

hooray - 061010

a new belle and sebastian record, write about love .. and (short :) video going with it

mumford & sons - cirque royal - 300910

nice opening band, with the m&s members watching at the side of the stage and later playing along .. their gig was, like the one at pp, great, i particularly liked the nice light-bulbs during little lion man, lightning the whole cirque, the story about forgetting the lyrics of that song on a us tv-show, and the tete a tete at the talurelekker, a small resto down the street serving nice belgian dishes .. below a new song they played (already at pp it took my attention, as it's one of the spare moments when the whole drum set is used)

josh ritter - botanique - 160910

one of my favorites of the evening, 4th song of the 2 hour gig, from then on, while
looking into my star's eyes, i knew it would be a great evening ..

good man / snow is gone / southern pacifica / change of time / folk bloodbath / rattling locks / rumours / wolves / monster ballads / the curse / lark / long shadows / long may you run (neil young) / the remnant / stuck to you / in the dark (literally) / lantern / kathleen / right moves / another new world / harrisburg (with piece of talking heads' once in a lifetime) / to the dogs or whoever // (already gone then) 500 miles / lilian, egypt / wait for love

don't leave me here alone - 050910

a new national song .. which they played the day after i saw them in the paradiso,
too bad we didn't get it there, i was feeling that last line back then (too) ..
hopefully something for the ab-show

leonard cohen - stpietersplein gent - 220810

walking across that big square will never be the same again, from now on we'll dance
there to the end of love .. best part was, next to the great songs, his goodbye, an old
man speaking: i don't know if we shall meet again, but you've got all the blessings

dance me to the end of love / the future / ain't no cure for love play / bird on a
wire / everybody knows / in my secret life / who by fire / the darkness / born in
chains / chelsea hotel #2 / the anthem / tower of song / suzanne / sisters of mercy /
the gypsy's wife / feel so good / the partisan / boogie street / halleluja / i'm
your man / take this waltz // so long, marianne / first we take manhattan / famous
blue raincoat / if it be your will / closing time // i tried to leave you / heart
with no companion

pukkelpop - 19210810

magic .. saturday evening in the marquee, something moved .. everyone there felt it ..
listen yourself, watch the animation at the background and be amazed

.. i already have one today-music hero (alec turner of the monkeys & shadow puppets),
now jonsi is there as well .. what a music he creates (here and with sigur ros) ..
i wonder what would happen if those two team up ..

another great voice earlier on thursday in the same marquee, mark lanegan, doing the
same, only accompanied by one (great) guitarist .. playing an old song which i didn't
know yet, hooray ..

just in time to claim the last piece of ground on the main-camping, at the cost of a bottle of leffe, all this just before 12 o'clock, so indeed lots of people .. because of that no frightened rabbits, first gig was tame impala in the club, and already sounding nice .. next megafaun, not megafun but good music nevertheless, then off to the marquee for black rebel motorcycle club, sounding indeed black and a bit monotone, leaving us with spread your love like a fever, and after pp, we indeed were all a bit sick .. then a first highlight, band of horses, good memories on their botanique gig (and afterwards ;), now again a really good set and nice visuals on top, views of the wild west going well with their music, so there, the world was such a wonderful place .. after a bit of girls (relaxing in the chateau, with the seats removed this year, so sitting on the ground) a big guy in the marquee, mark lanegan, only accompanied with a great guitarist, first time i saw him solo, and again he did a great job .. then there was already fear of the dark (nice intro and shouting along), and apparently they (iron maiden) did not play run to the hills (my favorite), so i sang it myself .. then goldfrapp, eighties keyboard music in 2010, a bit strange .. at the end of the day these new puritans, chains hanging on stage, again strange, but now sounding interesting and promising .. missed the flaming lips, again a good show i heard from a good source, although she had no confetti in her hair or clothes ..

day two, after an amazingly cold, cold night started with kate nash singing out of tune, so quickly leaving that for the last song of harlem (although the schedule gave them ten more minutes) .. then fanfarlo in the now boiling chateau, great music, unknown except their i'm a pilot, which we didn't hear .. then blood red shoes and white lies, now on big stages, quite different to the small club and chateau were i saw them before .. a bit of avi buffalo, but not that intrigued by them, and then eels on the main stage, with a great show, lots of hombre lobo songs, including the sad but nice that look you give .. then getting ready for mumford & sons, and an amazing atmosphere in the marquee, putting a constant smile on their faces .. they awakened our soul, and much more, another highlight .. then a bit of the tallest man on earth, one guy with a guitar, sounding nice .. after that the club was a beach house, not an astronaut's, and they didn't play that song either, but still a nice gig .. then i went to snow patrol instead of the xx, one great marquee moment was enough for me .. no snow on this hot day, but enough nice songs

last day, starting with a complete cooked meal and selah sue on the main stage, nice voice, but her songs are a bit of the same .. then broken glass heroes and gogol bordello from in between, with water flying everywere (indeed, hot again) .. then the low anthem in the marquee, really nice songs, and silent, with the boiler beats sometimes sounding louder .. then another highlight, this time on the main stage, we were good in front, and we did not mistaken them for strangers, although for some the first time live .. for me, another nice national gig, but now in really nice company .. then a bit of au revoir simone, three girls on keyboards, followed by lots of men on guitars, the queens of the stone age, an amazing gig, no time to rest, just enough to go with the flow .. after that maybe the best of the whole festival and a big change to the previous (which is one of the nice things of this festival, different styles, but all great music), jonsi in the marquee, playing the songs of his solo debut, slow shows mixed with more uptempo work, with incredible visuals in the background, strange clothing, and so moving music (see above), leaving us amazed with an amazing grow till tall .. then 2 many dj's, a good party to end these three days, followed by a happy birthday to pukkelpop and alarms (fireworks) and no suprises .. next year again ?

and (my own) difference between music on disc and on stage: music on disc passes on
(unless you use repeat), while a live song (or gig) you experience with your full attention ..

mark lanegan: when your number isn’t up / one way street / miracle / like little willie
john / don’t forget me / where the twain shall meet / one hundred days / hanging tree /
jesus’ program / halo of ashes / hit the city // i'll take care of you

pp-2 - 170810

2 more days .. in anticipation some great moments of the past 4 years ..

yes - 150810

and another nice (old) one .. beautiful and sad at the same time, like only they can ..

goose - words - 120810

new single, bit 80s like .. next week saturday in pp's dance hall

no need - 040810

to pray anymore, it's raining .. probably the best 10 min song,
by only 2, namely two gallants

oning a - 290710

warme spiegeltent .. nadien was het time to sleep .. tot volgend jaar!

daan - stbaafsplein - 190710

belgium's most divers (and maybe best) songwriter on flanders nicest open air stage,
between two of gent's towers .. good live versions of the manhay songs, with a wink
to this night's setting in brand new truth 'so i live in a fucked up country, hm except
gent maybe' .. best part the duet jamais neutral (from the cinema disc), with drumster
isolde singing in front of the stage as in the video below (i think a year ago it was
still from behind the drum set) ..

gentse feesten - 180710

mee eens ben

glastonbury - 080710

amazing festival, with a goosebumps performance of muse together with the edge,
covering u2's where the streets have no name (and have a look at matthew's smile),
afterwards the edge was telling in the studio: they asked me and i had to think for,
hmm, like ... three minutes ..

and their classic time is running out, extasing the field, preceded by short
singalong moment

and another nice collaboration: florence joining the xx during their remix cover of
her you've got the love .. unfortunatelly not on youtube anymore ..

the national - paradiso - 060710

on the same evening as the world cup semi-final of the netherlands against uruguay, a national concert in the dutch national rock temple, and because of the game they started earlier .. they all wore something orange, with matt in a costume (looking a bit reddish) .. the gig started like a final, song after song, and matt at some point 'hm it seems we're rushing' and also 'you're not wearing that much orange, i'm feeling a bit like a dick' .. as if they knew the result of the coming game, they played a victory show, with lots of high violet songs, and one and a half of the old 'sad song for dirty people' album, available and the end of cardinal song glued after, something they did apparently for the first time, which was noticeable as matt was too early singing the line 'jesus christ you have confused me' .. great to see they keep on surprising themselves .. only highlights this evening, a superb squalor victoria, with matt screaming like a dutch fan after a goal of his team (three later the evening) .. and twice a great hat-trick, with a short break in between, first daughters-england-fake and then runaway-november-terrible .. then the game had already started, so no about today this evening, luckily i have since short a live-version of this song on disc :)

bergen - 020710

a norwegian city where this norwegian photographer, mikkel mcalinden hangs in the contempary wing of the kunstmuseum, this picture 'passing cars' took my attention, and also his other work is worth looking at

i wonder - 290610

if he (tom mcrae) played this lovely song also at the cactusfestival 3 years ago ..
didn't know it then ..

summer - 210610

is here (at least in our thoughts :) .. so a summer track, imagine a really hot day
and summer storm arriving, on the tones of calexico's fractured air (live at our
lovely ab)

gestemd - 140610

i see a darkness - 070610

the title track of bonnie prince billy's amazing album (see previous post), in the
version of johnny cash .. and another (great) cover, of nick cave's
mercy seat .. both tracks of his american recordings III album

black - 020610

just now i discovered bonnie prince billy's great album i see a darkness, although not the most cheerful (voted 9th in pitchfork's top 100 of the 90ties, having my favorite on 1 -ok computer- and one also just a year ago discovered on 2 -loveless, by my bloody valentine-) .. here my favorite track .. black, you are my enemy .. the only way that i can see is to hold you close to me ..

girls in hawaii - 310510

yesterday the drummer of this fine belgian band crashed in a car accident .. aged 28 ..
i become silent thinking of the loss for his family and friends .. and put on this song ..

queen elisatbeth piano contest, finals part II - 280510

and we have a winner :) - ok, 5th place it turned out, should've been a bit higher - yesterday's performance of kim tae-hyung was breath-taking, and every commentator agreed that it was magical (normally they all differ on opinions, yesterday one labeled saint-saens concerto as outdated, when another counted it to his favorites) .. first beethoven 6th sonate, and from the start he took your attention .. next the mandatory work, which normally does not sound that interesting, but he made you listen .. and then finally brahm's first piano concerto, a 45 minute piece .. and although the tv-sound doesn't come close to hearing it live, i was happy to have seen this .. the nicest part was after the last note, when the pianist got up and was noticeable moved himself .. this went straight to ..

queen elisabeth piano contest, finals - 270510

i remember my father watching the queen elisabeth contest on television when i was young(er), and me thinking isn't there anything else on .. now i find myself in front of the tele and enjoying it (and thanks to the magic red button live and direct) .. the first of this year's finals i saw and already some nice pieces (and of course good pianists) .. first one which captured my attention was saint-saens' 5th piano concerto, the second schubert's sonate d 959, one of his last .. 45 minutes of moving music .. and finally prokoviev's first piano concerto, which he wrote at the age of 19 as final exam at the music academy .. wonder what i was doing at that age ....

elbow with the bbc orchestra - 210510

just stumbled on this .. goosebumps .. enjoy !

more the national on later - 200510

from last week's show .. anyone's ghost and terrible love, my favorite
high violet track of the moment .. it takes an ocean not to break ..

school is cool - video - 190510

finally a gig in my favorite bar in gent .. and i almost couldn't get in .. lots of people to see this years humo rock rally winners, the first 'sold out gig' the singer would later call it .. after fifteen minutes listening through the closed door (the friendly guy in front didn't want to open it) finally inside, right in time for their road to nowhere cover (talking heads song, though i remember editors' version), sounding nice, as the rest of their songs, with new kids in town indeed amazing when seen live (and a strange but funny video, belgian surrealism ?) .. ending with a pixies cover (after not leaving and coming back for an encore because the bar's too small), not bad .. and they'll play at this years boomtown festival, hooray

the national visits later - 120510

yes, yesterday live on the bbc, today already on the net .. and have
to say i prefer this above the official bloodbuzz video ..

and an amazing acoustic live version of vanderlylle cry baby
can be found on the bbc music website

peace - 060510

in the middle east ? maybe if they listened to this middle east (the band) song .. fool's gold

later - 060510

this summer on a stage at pp .. can't wait ..

mijn uitzicht - 040510

mijn stad

end times - 280410

.. are here .. i was behind with eels' new album .. and what an amazing title track,
and equally amazing video

high violet - 260410

the new national album comes out on may 11th (mark in your agenda!) .. but now already streaming from the nytimes website (great bands choose great means of communication), here two of my (already) favorite songs, two times rather slow but so nice ones ..

spring is in the air - 260410

(ok, not really today, but still ..) time for a happy track .. listen to this and immediately you start singing and drumming along .. animal arithmetic, the second track from jonsi's solo album (sigur ros singer), which is more cheerful than the bands work

new national single - 120410

hooray :)

and already the best outro of 2010

and the opening track of the upcoming album .. with funny hand shaking at the end ..

band of horses - botanique - 090410

my first gig in the nice botanique orangerie room, just in time to cross it of my things to do before i'm 30 list .. great band, great sound, great atmosphere .. taking you to deserted american fields with one left saloon, where they are playing .. superb great salt lake already second song, and some new work as well .. today no hooo-shouts, but lot's of thank you tyler ramsey, the band's guitar player who opened the show

factory / the great salt lake / too soon / nw apt / weed party / is there a ghost? / infinite arms / older / a song for you (gram parsons) / marry song / no one’s gonna love you / blue beard / cigarettes, wedding bands / compliments / ode to lrc / the funeral / writers // evening kitchen (on the small balcony) / the snow fall / sugarcube (yo la tengo)

mintzkov - vooruit - 260310

gig in the vooruit in stead of the minnemeers hall, a change the singer (and we) welcomed .. nice gig, with great new songs and already proven old ones .. here below the best intro of the year (so far), and an old one, state of play, combining what they do best, and my favorite of the evening

team william - 190310

nice new single (wonderyear III) and some more fine tunes

it's not all good and it's not all bad - 070310

but it's all beautiful .. eels' things the grandchildren should know, from the with strings tour ..
one of the gems in my 3400 songs collection

and another one .. perfect love from graham coxon (blur's guitarist), of the spinning top album

florence and the machine - vooruit - 220210

florence looking a bit tired with unwashed hair for some days (it didn't lift up in the air tonight), but still sounding astonishing, what a voice .. second song was heads on, kiss with a fist, sung like she meant it .. between two lungs best song on the record and also now great, and the an amazing final with dog days are over and everyone jumping up and down on florence demand, resulting in a big smile on her face ...

but the surprise of the evening was the starting band, sian alice group, been a while since i've seen such a good opener .. rhythmic soundscapes with occasional outburst and an angelic voice on top

happy b-day youtube !! - 150210

5 years .. and thanks to this great site we can enjoy clips as these .. midlake's acts of man

the veils - handelsbeurs - 100210

good gig, but the singer was jetlag'ed, hadn't slept for three days, which was noticable throughout the gig (in a good and lesser way) .. some solo songs as well, including requests (the springsteen approach is getting popular), always a plus, and nux vomica as slot, which is, a nice one

bejart - capitole - 220110

3 pieces of ballet of the big choreographer bejart .. the first one, ce que l'amour me dit on a mahler symphony, i didn't get (idem for the music), taught about three times it finished and someone kept on appearing, still, it has an entertaining middle piece .. next le chant du compagnon errant, this time a song by mahler, was already better, only two men on stage, this dance more interesting than the whole first part .. but then, a work of art, his version of ravel's bolero .. it seems like the music was written for this interpretation, already capturing from the start (see video) until the big finale, leaving you amazed in your chair .. everyone should see this once in a lifetime live on stage ..

[after winter, there will be] (500) days of summer - 160110

great movie, with a great soundtrack, featuring doves (there goes the fear) and these nice songs, the first one has the best intro of 2009, the second is short and amazing (and old, bookends .. the second part of the video), the third tells you everything about .. living free, and the last one is france's first lady, humming really, frenchly ..

snow, freezing temperatures, winter, brrrrr - 110110

luckily there's music to keep us warm, and a cool solo at the end
